Our students ask … about best meditation colors

Q: What is the best color to meditate on?

The color that calls to you. You can focus on your favorite color or pick one of the rainbow colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, or violet. You might concentrate on a preferred peaceful image—the blue of the ocean, the green of new leaves, the bright yellow of fresh lemons.

In yoga teaching, the rainbow spectrum colors are associated with our body’s seven energy centers, called chakras. You might choose a quality you’d like to embody, one that is aligned to a chakra and color. Moving up your spine, the chakra colors, energy centers, and affiliated qualities are:

  • Red – the root chakra located at your tailbone – associated with abundance, strength, security, courage, and connection to the earth
  • Orange – lower abdomen – self-confidence and letting go of judgment, addictions, guilt, criticism
  • Yellow – solar plexus – tolerance, clarity of thought, self-control, taking back personal power
  • Green – heart – healing, harmony, receiving and offering love, compassion, forgiveness
  • Blue – throat – reclaiming spiritual power, speaking our truth with discernment, discretion, and compassion
  • Indigo – third eye – living in peace and tranquility, developing intuition and insight
  • Violet – crown of head – inspiration, wisdom, satisfaction, connection to higher self
