Q: How can I stop work worries from interrupting my meditation?
A student once told me that, while she meditates on her religion, thoughts of work keep coming up. She asked: “How can I stop that?”
My answer is, “You cannot.” Sorry to say, but our minds are designed to think all the time. Do not beat yourself up for having those thoughts. If your work is busy, then you will have that work priority running through your head. If your kids are keeping you busy, then their needs and your concerns about them will be on your mind.
But we can train ourselves to meditate or focus on one thing, and that will rapidly calm those kinds of interrupting thoughts. The key is practice. When the thoughts come up, observe and acknowledge them without judgment, and let them go. The more we practice being in the present moment, or focusing on one thing, the more quickly we can bring our minds to quietness.
